GRANT FUNDING AVAILABLE TO HELP AGENCIES ACROSS THE COUNTRY Effective October 1, 2009
The Department of Justice has awarded federal funding to Project Lifesaver to assist potential agencies initiate the Project Lifesaver program in their communities, if they cannot afford to do so on their own. This funding will pay for agencies to start the Project Lifesaver program, and will pay for equipment under the Ownership Model, while the agency will only be responsible for instructor travel expenses. A one-page grant form must be filled out by the potential agency, and specific criteria will need to be met to qualify for funding. The criteria seeks information on the Alzheimer's population in the community, available SAR personnel, size of population, annual training budget of agency, lack of caregiver education programs in the community, and other information.
A grant committee will review the applications and select agencies where the funding will have the greatest impact. Because of this, smaller agencies are still encouraged to apply - communities with large populations of citizens at-risk but with a correspondingly large staff of first responders would not necessarily outscore smaller communities that demonstrate a greater burden.
If you know of surrounding agencies wishing to come on board but cannot afford to do so, please forward them the above information regarding the grant and ask them to contact Tommy Carter at Project Lifesaver - 757.546.5502 ext. 102 or tcarter@projectlifesaver.org.
FOR EXISTING AGENCIES
Through this grant, PLI will make available 1,800 stipends across the country to existing Project Lifesaver agencies, each valued at $190 – which is the cost of one personal locater transmitter plus a year’s supply of replacement batteries and bands per client. A one-page grant form must be filled out by the potential client, and specific criteria will need to be met to qualify for funding. Additionally, a signed HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) Waiver must be signed by both the client and the agency. Project Lifesaver has the individual client forms available, as well as the HIPAA Waiver.
Maximum – two family stipends per agency. Other stipends may be available for clients if local matching funds and community organizations come forward to agency to match federal grant funding.
Existing agencies and interested clients - Please contact Scott Nester for additional information on family stipends – snester@projectlifesaver.org or 757.546.5502 Ext. 112.
